Do you want to see a DRAGON? Dragons don’t even exist!!!! The children answered me immediately. You know, just when you don’t need it, children know how to respond very quickly.
You didn’t let me finish. Do you want to see a DRAGON TREE? Suddenly ALL EYES are on me.
That’s how we approached the charming little town of Icod de los Vinos.
But let me warn you first. The streets here are seriously uphill. If you plan on seeing the whole town, you’ll get quite the workout, particularly if you’re pushing a stroller.

Parking Jungle
Parking can be a bit of a hassle, with either paid options or trying your luck on the streets. It’s usually pretty tricky, though.
Our trick for parking is to always look for someone who is heading straight for the car and will be leaving. Sometimes, we get lucky.
Dragon vs. Butterflies
You absolutely must visit Icod de los Vinos. Especially for its beautiful square with a fantastic playground, dragon tree and the butterfly house, known as the Mariposarium.
Dragon Tree is really amazing how old and big the tree is. You can admire it from the San Marcos Park across the way, or pay the entrance fee to Parque del Drago and get up close and personal.
San Marcos Square also boasts some beautiful trees, but let’s be real—the kids will be thrilled more by the delightful playground there.
After exploring the town, we stopped at the Mariposario del Drago. The children loved the stunning butterflies, turtles, and birds.
Venezuelan Street Food
We followed the recommendation of the famous local areperia, Q’arepas. How could we not when you read reviews like the following:
“I wish I could take this restaurant home. You are all sweethearts and hardworking. Your food tastes amazing, and your prices are a dream. Thank you for a great time” – Hans Mustermann
San Marcos Beach
The black beach of San Marcos is one of the few beaches in the Icod de Los Vinos area where you can swim.
For us, the biggest advantage is the local restaurant with a large children’s corner directly above the beach. You won’t find many restaurants with a children’s corner in Tenerife.
